Turning 65: What Happens, and When

Official enrollment guidance and questions to prepare before turning 65.

Sep 21, 20261 min read

For many people, Medicare enrollment begins around age 65. The right timing depends on existing coverage and personal circumstances. Check the deadlines early: missing one can lead to a gap in coverage or a penalty.

Start with official enrollment guidance

Many people first become eligible for Medicare around age 65. The Initial Enrollment Period generally includes the three months before your birthday month, that month, and the three months after. Some circumstances change the timing.

Confirm your start date

Your sign-up date and circumstances affect when coverage starts. Check Medicare.gov or contact Medicare for the start date that applies to you.

If you have other coverage

If you are still working or have other coverage, contact Medicare and your employer benefits office before deciding when to enroll. Keep any notices and written instructions.

Prepare your questions

Write down your questions about enrollment dates, existing coverage, and who to contact. Your local SHIP can provide free, impartial counseling.

Worth asking

Questions worth bringing to any conversation.
